Von Ormy Mayor Art Martinez de Vara has been elected Vice-President of the Texas Municipal League Region 7 for 2012. Organized in 1913, the Texas Municipal League exists to serve the needs and advocate the interests of its member cities. By 2011, TML’s membership had grown to 1,115 cities. Over 18,000 mayors, council members, city managers, city attorneys, and city department heads are member officials of the League by virtue of their cities participation. TML Region 7 covers 27 counties in Southwest Texas, including the San Antonio, Laredo and Del Rio metropolitan areas. "This is an exciting time to serve as a TML officer in Region 7," Mayor Martinez de Vara said, "Region 7 comprises the vast majority of the Eagle Ford Shale play and most of our cities are experiencing unprecedented growth which provides both challenges and opportunity to our municipal leadership." The Eagle Ford Shale oil play is bringing an increased strain on the region's water resources, infrastructure and roads. Mayor Martinez de Vara said, "In 2012, I look forward to working with our member cities to develop public policy that will benefit our region, protect our natural resources and ensure sustainable economic development." TML Region 7 covers 27 counties, including Bexar, Webb, Val Verde, Atascosa, Duval, McMullen, LaSalle, Dimmit, Frio, Zavala, Maverick, Karnes, Wilson, Medina, Uvalde, Kinney, Gonzales, Wilson, Guadalupe, Comal, Kendall, Bandera, Real, Edwards, Kerr, Gillespie and Blanco. Von Ormy is located in Southwest Bexar County and is the newest City in Bexar County, being formed in 2008. Von Ormy has 1300 residents and is 2.2 square miles and lies along I-35 between Loop 410 and Loop 1604 in southwest Bexar County.
